Instructor: Lindsey Andrews | 3-weeks | Saturdays March 29-April 12 | 7:00-9:00 PM | In-Person, 719 N Mangum St, Durham, NC

A corporate risk analyst for a US firm becomes obsessed with a mysterious language cult in Greece; a filmmaker wants to document the cult’s ritual killings. Don DeLillo’s 1982 novel, The Names, explores the larger landscape of US-Middle East politics at the height of the Cold War and the dawn of neoliberalism, and asks what it means to be swept up in the reckless tides of US power. It considers deeply human themes around language, loneliness, and cultural differences, placing them within the historical context of US foreign relations of the 1970s. What is the role of film and media in creating the truth? Do corporations own governments, or do governments control corporations? What role do banks play in deciding whose life is valuable?  Does language express meaning or make it? Does life have a purpose or are statistics all we have? What is a risk analyst anyway? This reading group runs for 3 weeks and will explore the novel’s key themes and also provide you with an introduction to Don DeLillo’s early work.
