Sports documentaries have long been crucial in chronicling the humanity of athletes, whether depicting the hopes and struggles of Chicago teens striving for the NBA in Hoop Dreams (1994) or the foundation of an extreme sport movement in Dogtown and Z Boys (2001). Sports fans often view athletes as one-dimensional public figures on T.V. or in stadiums. But documentaries foreground their deeply complex personal lives and emotional worlds–who they truly are as humans. For example, tennis phenom Naomi Osaka bowing out of the French Open helped shine a light on athletes’ mental health. Documentaries focused on athletics have the ability to showcase the resiliency of the human spirit while also highlighting social issues around economics, race, and gender. This course aims to use sports as a means for human understanding and will include fun, lively discussions and films of varied styles, formats, and focuses. Films may include Undefeated (2011), The Deepest Breath (2023), and/or Keepers of the Game (2016).

For Durham, NC, where we are located, the living wage threshold is $49,000 for an individual. All sliding-scale needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.
Scholarships: We are currently able to offer three full scholarships per class. Our full scholarship tier is a nonrefundable offering, limited to one per student per month.Because our scholarship funding is limited, selecting multiple full scholarships in a single month will result in disenrollment from all classes. If the scholarship tier you need is sold out please email us directly, and we will add you to a waitlist and notify you if additional scholarships become available. Please see our FAQ for more information, including installment plans and refund policy.
