Ever find yourself shopping or spending too much money going out because you’re bored, lonely, or heartbroken? You might identify with Emma, Madame Bovary’s eponymous narrator. Although Gustave Flaubert’s novel was written in the 19th century, capturing the conditions at the height of European industrial capitalism, it reflects our current moment. The novel raises questions about women’s roles and the options on offer for meaningful social and political life. It asks whether love and happiness are possible within capitalist structures of marriage, family, and convention. It even explores how debt rules so much of our contemporary existence. The novel also gives us an opportunity to think about the questionable origins of modern medicine, women’s medical mistreatment, the imperatives of motherhood, and the havoc loneliness can wreak on our mental health. Read this classic novel in community to get the most out of it!
