Ursula Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness (Reading Group) [Durham, NC]

The king is pregnant. So begins Ursula Le Guin’s early science fiction novel, The Left Hand of Darkness, which turns an anthropological eye on a gender-fluid alien society. Since its publication in 1969, the novel has served as an important touchstone for science fiction’s radical experimentation with sex and gender. Although set far in the future, with space travel and interstellar communication, it also explores urgent questions of its own moment about Cold War politics, the legacies of monarchy and colonialism, religion, and patriarchy. As winter approaches, join us as we discuss the snowy planet of Gethen and what it can teach us about both the 1960s and our contemporary culture.

This class will take place in person at Night School Bar in Durham. Night School requires that students refrain from attending in-person classes when sick. For more on our class policies, see our FAQ. Instructors will also follow this policy. If your instructor is sick, class may be moved to online for a session or rescheduled to the week following the final scheduled session at the instructor’s discretion.
Sliding Scale: Night School Bar pays instructors and staff a living wage.
