Join our in-person film screening and discussion series at Night School Bar!.

Even though we can't smell or taste a film, food scenes have shaped some of the most visceral movie and TV storytelling, both in fiction and documentary. This course will explore a variety of media — from a classic feature film to ingenious television episodes and documentary — where food shows up in unexpected ways to move along emotional arcs, sociopolitical issues and the way we relate to ourselves and each other. We'll watch the movie Big Night, an excerpt or episode from The Bear, and documentary excerpts from Parts Unknown (Anthony Bourdain), High on the Hog, NYT Cooking's On the Job, and a short independent film by your professor! Through these movies and clips, we'll explore how food leads us to discussions on identity and culture, complex histories, labor, immigration and other themes.

This class will take place in person at Night School Bar in Durham. Night School requires that students refrain from attending in-person classes when sick. For more on our class policies, see our FAQ. Instructors will also follow this policy. If your instructor is sick, class may be moved to online for a session or rescheduled to the week following the final scheduled session at the instructor’s discretion.
