Welcome to Trans Studies! This course will meet in person at Night School Bar in Durham, and will be an opportunity not only to study but also to make community. Intro to Trans Studies will feature a mélange of art, life, and theory by Trans authors and about Trans possibilities. We’ll clarify some terms with Gender: A Graphic Guide by Meg-John Barker, and we’ll read a few selections from memoirs like Amateur by Thomas Page McBee and the graphic Genderqueer by Maia Kobabe. We’ll take a glimpse at Trans futures with excerpts from SF like 2312 by Kim Stanley Robinson and The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin. We’ll read a few powerful chapters of Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters, and hear from nonbinary luminaries like Kate Bornstein and Jeffrey Marsh. We’ll see how the field started with Susan Stryker’s “My Words to Victor Frankenstein,” and we’ll get political with selections from Transgender Marxism by Gleeson and O'Rourke, and “Wages for Transition'' by Harry Josephine Giles. We’ll have our minds blown by the incomparable poet and performer, J Mace III, and dive deep into the NYC Ballroom scene. We’ll explore Trans Magic and punk Genderfuckery with the life-changing comix and stories of Caoimhe Harlock, and we’ll deconstruct trans-exclusionary radical feminism (TERFism) with the searing critical acumen of Andrea Long Chu. Through it all we’ll be thinking hard, not only about what Trans means, but also about what Trans does, how Transness changes us, changes worlds, and changes the conditions of possibility for thinking itself! See you at Night School Bar!

Recordings may be provided upon request for missed classes.

Sliding Scale: Night School Bar pays instructors and staff a living wage, and your tuition goes toward supporting this practice. Please pick the payment tier that corresponds to your needs, and consider our commitment to fair labor practices when doing so. We will never request or require proof of need, and do not use an income-based sliding scale; we trust you to decide what payment tier is right for you. If you would like additional support deciding or would like to learn more about the practice of using a sliding scale, we recommend this resource from Embracing Equity

Scholarships: We are currently able to offer three full scholarships per class. Our full scholarship tier is a nonrefundable offering, limited to one per student per month. Because our scholarship funding is limited, selecting multiple full scholarships in a single month will result in disenrollment from all classes. If the scholarship tier you need is sold out please email us directly, and we will add you to a waitlist and notify you if additional scholarships become available. Please see our FAQ for more information, including installment plans and refund policy.
