Short-Form Collections: Yearlong Book Workshop, Section 3 IN-PERSON [$300/3 months suggested]
Instructor: Andrews | Thurdays 7-10 PM ET | Workshops Thursdays April-June IN-PERSON
DURHAM, NC at Arcana, 331 W Main St.
Optional ONLINE Process Meetings: Sundays 6-8 PM ET | April-June
Tentative Future Dates: 4/28, 5/26, 6/30, 7/28, 8/25, 9/29, 10/27, 11/17, 12/29
Enrollment in this class is limited to 6 people per section. Sign-ups are in 3 month increments for what will ultimately be a yearlong workshop. At the end of each 3 month period, those who are already signed up have priority in continuing on. If you choose not to continue, your spot will be opened up to new participants. The current sign-up is for April-June.
At the end of the summer of 2020, Zadie Smith published a slim book of short-form writing–just under 100 pages–titled Intimations, which she had written over the course of the first few months of pandemic restrictions. She described the book as “written in the scraps of time the year itself has allowed: small by definition; short by necessity.” Our yearlong writing workshop will be designed to help us write in those same scraps of time, pulling together smaller bits of writing–fragments, drifts, intimations, poems, sketches, scenes, vignettes, etc.--into small collections, chapbooks, and novellas. The focus will be on writing habits, and short and fragmentary forms, not longform narrative. Each month you will receive prompts and a suggested book to read for inspiration. There will be an optional mid-month check-in, shared with other sections, and an end-of-the-month writing workshop exclusive to your group. There will also be “co-working” opportunities sporadically through each month organized by the instructor or other students. Together, we will provide each other with inspiration, encouragement, accountability, feedback, and support as we work towards producing our writing collections.
Authors for inspiration might include: Zadie Smith, Jenny Boully, Gwendolyn Brooks, Maggie Nelson, Anne Boyer, Brian Blanchfield, Sandra Cisneros, Kathy Acker, Lynda Barry, Denis Johnson, among others.
All sections will receive monthly prompts via email on the 1st of each month and be able to participate in a mid-month check-in and discussion of a recommended book of collected short forms. Each section will have its own 3-hour workshop near the end of each month. Writing for that workshop should be submitted a minimum of 5 days before workshop.
We depend on a mix of direct student donations and supplemental donations to make all classes pay-what-you-can. Please pick the pricing tier that corresponds with your needs and that you are able to pay now. If you would like to pay in installments, make your first payment now and make a note on your check-out form. If you would like to donate more later in the term, you can always come back and use the “Make a One Time Donation” button! To use a full scholarship, just pick the $3 tier to cover site/processor fees.
If at any point up to 48 hours before your first class session you realize you will be unable to take the class, we will work with you to reallocate your funds to a future class, to another student’s scholarship, or refund it. After classes begin, we are only able to make partial refunds and adjustments.
