“As of July 15, at least 121 bills have been proposed around the country targeting transgender people and youth. That includes 36 healthcare bans in 22 states, and 66 sports bans in 36 states.” That’s according to GLAAD, one of the nation’s foremost organizations for Queer advocacy. During this 90-minute teach-in, we’re going to unpack the broader right-wing strategy behind this massive wave of anti-Trans legislation, think through the stakes, account for the political motivations at play, and begin to discuss the communities of resistance that have stepped up across the country to fight for justice. In order to do that, we’ll start by getting at the multiple meanings of gender: what it is, how it works, who it empowers, who it oppresses, and how it can nevertheless serve as a jumping-off point for the work of liberation. There isn’t any preparation required for this teach-in—just show up, and no matter where you’re coming from, you’ll be equipped to participate. There has never been a better time to come to grips with this liberatory movement, so sign up, bring your friends, and get ready for a fun and accessible introduction to gender and the fight for Trans liberation!
