Intro to Publishing: A Poetry Workshop
Full Tuition: $300 — Scholarship Options in Drop-Down Menu
Instructor: Spratley | 6 weeks | Mondays May 8-June 26 (no class 5/29 or 6/19) | 6:00-8:00 PM EDT | ONLINE
You’ve been writing poetry for a while, and now you’re ready to publish, but it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Writers interested in publishing their work are first met with the task of learning to navigate the publishing system. How do I know where to submit my poetry? When should I spend money on a submission? How do I center my goals and values in the publishing process? In this class, students will develop a systematic approach to building their publication history, starting from their individual goals and values around poetry. This class is designed to support students in learning how to approach the publication process through transferable, replicable practices and frameworks. A portion of each class will be dedicated to workshopping poems in preparation for submitting to literary magazines and awards. We will research, read, and discuss work by contemporary poets, including Leila Chatti, Diane Seuss, Aracelis Girmay, and Airea D. Matthews.
This course will include the option to write poems for workshop throughout the course. However, students are also welcome to bring existing poems that would benefit from workshop rather than writing a new poem each week. Students can expect to bring or write 5 poems for this course.
There is no audit option for writing workshops, as all participants are expected to participate in the workshopping sessions.

All tuition goes to paying instructors and staff a living wage. We encourage you to pick the payment tier that corresponds with your needs, but ask that you please consider our commitment to fair labor practices when doing so. We are currently able to offer three full scholarships per class, and one full scholarship per person per term. If the scholarship tier you need is sold out or you would like to pay tuition on an installment basis, please email us directly, and we will work with you.
If at any point up to 48 hours before your first class session you realize you will be unable to take the class, please email us and we will reallocate your funds to a future class, to another student’s scholarship, or refund it. After classes begin, we are only able to make partial refunds and adjustments.
