“You’re told that if you ‘do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.’  In Work Won’t Love You Back, Sarah Jaffe, a preeminent voice on labor, inequality, and social movements, examines this ‘labor of love’ myth — the idea that certain work is not really work, and therefore should be done out of passion instead of pay.

Over the course of four weeks, we’ll read Jaffe’s book—which combines stories from actual people’s lives, histories of labor, and critical analysis—and contemplate the idea that “the labor of love, in short, is a con.” How do we internalize concepts such as “dream job,” “side hustle,” “work-life balance” and, of course, “labor of love” in ways that ultimately make us complicit with our own exploitation? What does it say about how our identities have become inextricably linked to our work that the question, “what do you do?” has come to mean, “what’s your job?” and is one of the most common forms of engaging with new acquaintances? And, in an economy increasingly defined by gig work, independent contracting and entrepreneurialism, how can we collectively reclaim our time and demand better lives—lives in which work doesn’t define us, determine our worth, or keep us from experiencing the pleasures that we all deserve?

This class will take place in person at Night School Bar in Durham. Night School requires that students refrain from attending in-person classes when sick. For more on our class policies, see our FAQ. Instructors will also follow this policy. If your instructor is sick, class may be moved to online for a session or rescheduled to the week following the final scheduled session at the instructor’s discretion.
