Do you sense that something is wrong with capitalism, but feel like you don’t have the language to talk about it? Then this is the seminar for you! Come with your intuition and curiosity, leave being able to explain to all your friends and foes exactly why capitalism sucks! No advanced preparation or previous knowledge is necessary!
We know that there’s something about capitalism that makes healthcare too expensive, consumer debt insurmountable, and the rent too damn high. But how exactly does capitalism work? In the course of three hours, you’ll get a in-depth review of our reader, “How to Talk about the Problem with Capitalism,” and an opportunity to explore the ideas and concepts of anti-capitalist critique with like-minded folks. Together, we’ll learn about the origins of capitalism and core critical concepts such as alienation, primitive accumulation, surplus value, and class struggle. We will also explore the differences among critical approaches; for example: what’s the difference between socialism and anarchism? or, how does Marxism fit with indigenous or feminist critiques? We’ll also touch briefly on how other systems of oppression—such as colonialism, patriarchy, and white supremacy—intersect with and shape capitalism. This course requires no advanced reading or preparation; you’ll get everything in class and you’ll leave with language and explanations that will allow you to better understand political economy.

If at any point up to 48 hours before your first class session you realize you will be unable to take the class, please email us and we will reallocate your funds to a future class, to another student’s scholarship, or refund it. After that point, we are able to offer 50% refunds.
