Join an in-person film screening and discussion series for three weeks at Night School Bar as we explore the dark absurdity of the human condition.

Touted as the leading light of “Greek Weird Wave” cinema, Yorgos Lanthimos has exploded into more mainstream film circles with 2023’s award-winning Poor Things. Lanthimos uses his uniquely absurd lens to create raw, dark allegories that illuminate the human condition within modern society — namely, the politics of shame and desire and the violent restraints of patriarchy.

In this mini-course we will meet and discuss three films directed by Lanthimos: Alps (Greece, 2011), The Lobster (Ireland, 2015) and The Favourite (UK, 2018). We’ll ponder themes, symbolism and the concept of “weird," as well as varied cinematic approaches and styles that traverse Lanthimos’s body of work. The first class will provide a brief introduction to Lanthimos and the rise of the “Greek Weird Wave,” with resources to explore more films. (Note: explicit sexual content, violence)

Sliding Scale: Night School Bar pays instructors and staff a living wage, and your tuition goes toward supporting this practice. Please pick the payment tier that corresponds to your needs, and consider our commitment to fair labor practices when doing so.
