**This course is in-person only. There is no virtual component. Participants must be age 21+
Full Tuition: $200 — Scholarship options are available in the drop-down enrollment menu for you to self-select.
Instructor: Sowj Kudva | 3 Weeks | Thursdays | July 11-25 | 6:00 - 9:30 PM ET | IN PERSON, 719 N Mangum St., Durham, NC
Join us for a screening series that considers the socio-political and economic realities of sex work in the United States from the 1980s to today. In this 3-week mini-course you will learn how to "read" the elements of cinematic narration—locations, framing, perspective, motifs, symbolism, and more—to understand how each film engages with and interrogates the sex work industry. We will watch: Hustlers (Lorene Scafaria, 2019, 110 minutes), The Florida Project (Sean Baker, 2017, 111 minutes), and the HBO documentary, The Stroll (Kristen Lovell and Zachary Drucker, 2023, 84 minutes). In our discussions, we will connect these films to issues of body-business capitalism, the policing of sex work, the conditions of labor, and how these films either reinforce, subvert, and/or construct Western, cultural understandings of the industry. There is no outside work required for this course! We will watch and discuss the films in class.

Sliding Scale: Night School Bar pays instructors and staff a living wage. For Durham, NC, where we are located, the living wage threshold is $49,000 for an individual. All scholarship needs are self-assessed, and we will never request or require proof of need.
Scholarships: We are currently able to offer three full scholarships per class. Our full scholarship tier is a nonrefundable offering, limited to one per student per month.Because our scholarship funding is limited, selecting multiple full scholarships in a single month will result in disenrollment from all classes. If the scholarship tier you need is sold out please email us directly, and we will add you to a waitlist and notify you if additional scholarships become available. Please see our FAQ for more information, including installment plans and refund policy.
