Artist vs Imposter: An Explorative Poetry Workshop [6-weeks, $250 Suggested]

Are you a ______ that writes poems? Maybe you feel creatively satisfied elsewhere but are curious about the written word. Do you struggle with identity and presence when it comes to your writing—finding your voice? Self-imposed restrictions can stifle our imaginative instincts, especially when we give heed to rules (unspoken or not) about who can create art and why. Imposter syndrome feeds off of this kind of restriction, causing many an artistic impulse to falter under “shouldn’t” and “can’t.” What if you heard the muse, the spark, the invitation and answered, “why not?”
In this poetry workshop, we’ll explore the artistic impulse itself—why write, why sing, why paint—as we grant ourselves permission to experiment, push, and play. Prompts and provocations will invite us to write poetry that pushes the boundaries of its own form as we consider multidisciplinary, multigenre works and explore poetic space within visual, dramatic, sonic arts. Readings will include Frank O’Hara, Mary Ruefle, Rachel Eliza Griffiths, Bianca Stone, Erica Lewis, and more.
We depend on a mix of direct student donations and supplemental donations to make all classes pay-what-you-can. If at any point up to 48 hours before your first class session you realize you will be unable to take the class, we will work with you to reallocate your funds to a future class, to another student’s scholarship, or refund it. After classes begin, we are only able to make partial refunds and adjustments.
